My strategy to finding the cheapest flights

Step 1: Set “From” as your home airport and “To” to Explore Everywhere.

Step 2: Set Depart to “Flexible Dates” and choose the month you want to travel

Step 3: Shop the options by price

Step 4: Set alerts for set dates (top left corner)

Once you follow these steps, you will be notified when it’s time to book!

You can also use the app, Hopper to time your booking. This app will tell you the best time to book. I️ typically only use this service to tell me when the prices are low. I️ don’t book through Hopper because it’s always best to book direct.

Hopper is also integrated into Capital One Travel, which is available to anyone with a Travel Credit Card like the Capital One Venture One or Venture X.

More Tips for Cheap Flights

Tip #2: Fly on Tuesdays

Don’t ask me to elaborate because I️ don’t know how it works but from my searches, it’s typical that Tuesdays have the lowest prices whereas Friday and Saturday have the highest.

Tip #3: Travel During Shoulder Season

Prices for all travel including flights, hotels & car rentals will be significantly lower during shoulder season. This is time in between “off-peak” and “peak” seasons based on weather. This year we went to Barcelona during shoulder season (end of March) and we experienced lower prices and less crowds!

Tip #4: Consider Flying Budget Airlines

Ok hear me out! Budget airlines are not ALL Bad. Except Spirit. Fuck Spirit.

We flew LEVEL, a budget airline out of Spain to get to Barcelona from New York and had a really pleasant time! Our one way flight cost us $448.06 for two! That’s seriously a steal!

Budget airlines often offer lower fares than traditional airlines, but they may have fewer amenities and stricter baggage restrictions. Just read the fine print! We packed our own food and didn’t expect any bells and whistles.

Tip 5: Book refundable and keep checking back

Typically, I️ am looking for the cheapest flight possible, but there are perks to buying the more expensive, refundable ticket. The main one is you can get your money back if you find a better deal.

It’s so annoying to keep track of the timing of your purchase and if you don’t have time for all that, buy a refundable ticket when you see a reasonable price and keep checking back. If you find a better price, cancel the first booking, and book the lower price.

This is good if you book a few seasons ahead of time. You never know how high or low prices will get!
