Money may be the reason that’s holding you back from living on the road, but truthfully, we know MANY people who make it work. So, here are some ways that you can do it… Seasonal Work (3-6 months at a time)We know a lot of people who work seasonally to make enough money to cover expenses. You can get a job at National Parks doing various things from being a front desk associate to a handyman. If you’re lucky, they may even include housing while some positions are Workamping jobs that require you to have a mobile home to stay in on site. Some Examples: National Parks Ski resorts & other seasonal resorts or hotels Farms in need of help during harvest season. The best example of this is the Sugar Beet Harvest which runs from October to November. We really did not have a great time here when we tried it, but others love it! Remote Positions (part or full time)There are plenty of companies that allow you to work from home, especially since the pandemic. If you read last week’s newsletter about our money journey, you’ll know I️ had a remote job for the first 6 months of living in the van. Truthfully, not all remote jobs are the same. A lot of client facing jobs can be difficult with varying levels of service for video calls. It’s doable, but harder. I️ was in sales and had a meeting a day at least. It’s not fun. I️ recommend remote jobs that are simple or more project based, where you can work more independently. Go for ones where you don’t have to organize too many meetings across time zones and maybe sneak in a hike on your lunch break. 🥴 Some Examples: Email based customer service Data Entry Salesforce CRM Admin (requires a certification for this) Coding Virtual Assistant, Sales Assistant, really any type of Assistant Digital Marketing (Content writing, social media, organizing digital ad campaigns, etc.) Traveling Medical ProfessionaI️
Freelance WorkIf you have a creative skill, you can pick up jobs on platforms like Fiverr and Upwork on a project by project basis. The best way to find these jobs really, is by word of mouth and sharing your work on social media. The money isn’t steady but if you live in a van, you don’t need much. One time, I️ designed a local theater’s show program for $300. Easy money if you ask me! Some Examples: Gig WorkWhen Matt and I️ were getting out of debt, we CRUSHED Instacart deliveries for extra cash. I️ 100% would do this if you’re in a pinch and just need some quick cash. We sometimes made $200 a day. Some Examples: Door Dash, UberEats or Grubhub Delivery Instacart Delivery (grocery shop for folks) Rover or Wag! (dog walking, or you can even be paid to housesit) Craigslist Help Wanted
Work For YourselfStart a business. If you’ve always wanted to do it, now is the time! We may be a little biased but, this is the way to go! You can start any type of business that does not require you to be in a physical place. Don’t be fooled though! This is not the easy way out. You need an entrepreneurial spirit and some business “know how” to be truly successful. Anyone can go viral on social media and make some money on a brand deal but it takes discipline, process and patience to run a lasting, sustainable business. In our last newsletter, I️ shared how much we made in 2022. We 100% would not have been as successful if we didn’t treat our content creation business like a “real” business. Passive IncomeDeveloping ways to make money while you sleep is one of the smartest ways to make an income, on the road or not. Right now, we don’t have a lot of passive streams of income, but it is at the top of our list to start building some. Most commonly, real estate is the best way to make passive income. You buy a duplex, rent out the second half to cover your mortgage and while you’re on the road, rent out your unit and you have steady income (as long as your tenant pays). Some Other Examples: Affiliate Marketing via Evergreen Content Online Stores via Print on Demand Angel Investing (starting a business someone else runs) Sell an online course Dropshipping
Stock Investing/CryptocurrencyI️ mean, don’t go and buy random stocks and say Meghan & Matt told you to do it! But for those who have the “know how”, invest their money in the stock market or crypto to make money. This is something you can do remotely. WARNING though… It’s risky business, and not a steady income. You also need time, energy and commitment. We do not recommend this route if you don’t know anything about it.
